The studio that bought us things like Wallace and Grommit and Chicken Run will bring a new holiday special to Netflix in November 2021. Robin Robin is a short film that will “break out” on Netflix on November 27, 2021.
Directed by Daniel Ojari and Michael Please, the short should be about 30 minutes long and will kick off what is expected to be a Christmas slate on Netflix in 2021.
It”s a stop motion short film that will see Gillian Anderson (The crown and sex education), Adeel Akhtar (Sweet tooth AND Enola Holmes) and Richard E. Grant (Tuca & Bertie and Gosford Park) voice alongside Bronte Carmichael and Amira Macey-Michael.
Gillian Anderson will voice the story”s evil villain in the form of a cat. Richard E. Grant will be the voice of Magpie, while Adeel Aktar will be the voice of Dad Mouse and Bronte Carmichael will be the main character of the title, Robin.
The film has been in development since November 2019, where The Guardian revealed some important details for the animated short.
Aardman”s managing director at the time told The Guardian that the film is about being yourself, adding:
“It”s a bit like The Ugly Duckling meets Oliver Twist. An egg randomly rolls into a dump. The thrush hatches and is raised by a family of rats. The thrush grows up trying to act like a mouse. She fluffs her feathers to look like a mouse and enjoys the cheese delights – but she can”t sneak into houses. ”
Here”s what you can expect from the short:
“Robin Robin is the captivating story of a robin who is adopted by a family of robber rats when his egg accidentally rolls into a dump. As she grows up, her differences become more apparent. She sets out on the robbery to stop all the robberies to prove to her family that she can be a very good rat, but ends up discovering who she really is. ”
Originally, the film was expected to hit Netflix by Christmas 2020, but a release date was never announced. It was in early December 2020 when Netflix provided a small update including the cast members announced above.
