Headlines have dominated in recent days about Avatar: The Last Airmaster and The legend of Korra moving imminently off Netflix, however, it”s likely to be streamed a bit more before moving to Paramount+ exclusively.
Both animated series originally aired on Nickelodeon in the 2000s and were added to Netflix in the US in 2020 and both entered the top 10.
Avatar: The Last Airmaster in particular, it performed extremely well on Netflix, spending 61 days in the top ten. The legend of Korra spent 20 days in the top 10 in the US.
Brian Robbins Confirms Avatar: The Last Airmaster Will Leave Netflix Eventually
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brian Robbins (who serves as CEO of Nickelodeon) in mid-July 2020, he was asked whether major programs licensed to Netflix would come out. Here are the quotes:
THR: Eventually, I imagine, Avatar and iCarly will be pulled off Netflix and come back to Paramount+ as an exclusive.
Yes. And it”s not like this is some secret that we”re throwing the wool over anyone else”s eyes in other cults. They are happy to have the content and understand the strategy. We are very frank about this.
Later in the interview, they seem to cover up the fact that they also licensed The legend of Korra for Netflix, but the main point is that Avatar: The Last Airmaster and The legend of Korra they won”t be in service forever.
This shouldn”t come as a surprise to anyone who”s been a Netflix customer for a while.
So how long will they be on Netflix? Programs are typically licensed on an annual basis to Netflix. The contract is clearly longer than a year, as we spent the first anniversary of the show being added on May 15, 2020.
Most Nickelodeon programs currently on Netflix have been available since 2019 and those added before are no longer available. That means we could see the series last a few more years and come out in the summer of 2023.
Netflix has not provided takedown dates for Avatar: The Last Airmaster or The legend of Korra.
Avatar: Will the Last Airmaster and The Legend of Korra leave Netflix out of the US?
Of course, Netflix also hosts these two programs in most regions of the world.
Although they all differed at the time they got their respective series, unlike in the United States, Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS don”t have a streaming presence in those regions, at least for now.
So while we should assume that these contracts will eventually expire in these regions, where they will go after Netflix is not immediately clear.
Elsewhere, Paramount+ is preparing exclusive Avatar projects in the future, with newly formed Avatar Studios creating new content, including a theatrical animated film.
Netflix is also working on its own live action Avatar project, which ran into several issues during development. Filming for the new series is expected to begin in November 2021.
