we can say that Iciar Bollarín She is a good director and deals with controversial issues, but within the film Maximabel showed bravery by showing ETA’s conflict giving voice to the killers. Or victimizers, if you want to use the term politically correct. Opens in Spanish cinemas on the day September 24th of 2021. You can read HERE another review by Movie theatertop sail of this movie.
Synopsis for ‘Maixabel’
Maixabel Lasa lost her husband, Juan María Jaúregui, murdered by ETA in 2000.
Eleven years later, she receives an unusual request: one of the killers asked to meet her in Nanclares de la Oca prison, in Álava, where she is serving a sentence after severing relations with the terrorist gang.
Despite the doubts and the immense pain, Maixabel Lasa agrees to meet face to face with the people who ended in cold blood with the life of who was her companion since the age of sixteen.
A high level of interpretation
The first thing that becomes clear in this movie is that Iciar Bollain has a knack for choosing equipment. About Maximabel all the actors stand out, but you have to give a special ovation to Blanca Portillo already Luis Tosar.
Blanca Portillo she’s great playing Maixabel Lasa, the widow of Juan María Jáuregui. Those who are aware of the ETA conflict know that Maixabel Lasa spent some years as director of Attention to Victims of Terrorism. Her statements and actions put her in the center of the band’s attention. And perhaps the theme that the film deals with, which is the approach of ETA prisoners to the victims, was just one more reason for having threatened it.
Another actor who could opt for the award for his performance is Luis Tosar. He puts himself in the shoes of Ibon Etxezzareta, one of the executioners of the socialist politician Jáuregui. It is a ten-star performance and deserved eternal applause, which is what happened when the film premiered at the Festival de San Sebastián. Phrases like “I would like to be Juan María to be your murderer” will be preached to many people.
Forgetfulness and forgiveness?
The film Maximabel It is based on real facts, follows the trajectory of Maixabel Lasa and her intention to understand why the terrorists did what they did. In the film, it is clear that those who repent do not even know how to answer some things. In 2011, ETA’s armed struggle ended, but there are unknowns that have not been resolved.
With Maximabel We can see that there are people who decide to change course and victims who want the perpetrators to respond to them, but there is also another face, the face of people who do not want to empathize with those who took everything from them. This face also reflects it perfectly maria cerezuela, playing María Jáuregui, daughter of Juan María. She doesn’t stop her mother from making the decisions she wants, nor does she reprimand him, but asks him to respect her position of not wanting to approach her father’s murderers.
Maximabel It’s a movie that awakens a lot of feelings. He is perfectly right and tries to balance himself at this difficult crossroads for the Spaniards. But what reflects the most is that all positions must be respected.
