One of the most surprising and acclaimed films from the latest edition of the Sitges Festival. the debutante Kvataniya side writes a solid thriller, with unpredictable twists and based on true events, about the police hunt for Rostov Carnivore, the most intelligent, elusive and wanted serial killer in the Soviet Union.
For more than 10 years, Soviet police forces have been trying to stop the most intelligent and wanted serial killer in the USSR. But even when it looks like they managed to get him, no one can prove his guilt. As the chase intensifies, the investigation becomes increasingly personal between detective and suspect. (shooting)

The execution undoubtedly tells the story of the serial killer Chikatilo. A criminal who dedicated himself to ruthlessly murdering young people and even underage girls, with total impunity, without being able to catch him. At that time, the police of the USSR had little experience in what was known in the United States as a serial killer, and to find the culprit of all these murders it was necessary to resort to new methods of investigation. As in the real case, we also have the background of the disintegration of the USSR itself.
Divided into several episodes, The execution uses a complex narrative, going back and forth in time, telling us about the investigation from different historical points of view. In this sense, the pretension, typical of a director who debuts in the cinema, is perceptible. Although it must also be said that the narrative is essential to tell the bizarre story that the film intends.
In addition to its great technical aspects, The execution counts in its main asset in the confrontation between the two protagonists. On one side we have the main inspector, played by Niko Tavadzeand on the other hand, his antagonist, the supposed assassin, played by Daniel Spivakovsky.
In every scene where both are, we find pure cinema. It’s amazing how the two actors complement each other, that as the plot progresses, we see that they have more things in common than it might seem at first glance. Without exaggeration, the interpretation of Spivakovsky as a serial killer is one of the best ever seen in the history of cinema. Repulsion, defenselessness and disgust pass from the screen to our skin every moment she appears framed on camera.
Despite not being a huge production, the truth is that unlike other Russian Blockbusters that have a much bigger budget, The execution it has a formal presence that many other films would like. On the one hand, it is supported by great photography that has a well-crafted chromatic intelligence, with scenes of great intensity in the most difficult moments (such as the case of the confrontation between the protagonist and the chess assassin, in a mixture of ocher and dark tones) and others more relaxed in which the staging delights in the unhealthy landscape that surrounds the assassin’s hut.
The execution also has North American influences, and among those included in the film, works such as Zodiac, The Silence of the Lambs or also some photos that seem to have been taken from the series Real detective (as well as part of the plot that makes up the script and which appears to be largely inspired by the first season).
The executionthe difference of citizen X (which is also centered around the same serial killer), has a final twist that might be surprising. Required? The truth is that to see a movie like the one mentioned above, it was better to go to the original source, while The execution tells a different story, much more disturbing, and certainly with more refined stylistic values (after all, citizen X It was a made-for-TV movie.
The execution it’s hard to follow, because we find ourselves with two different narrative threads, which will only eventually converge. In fact, the spectator must always be attentive if he does not want to reach an ending that is a plot twist In all rules. The problem is that perhaps this final twist is too complicated and, of course, could break with the fictionality pact that the viewer had previously signed. A script with a lot of ambition, which seems to want to reflect the typical pretension that is part of the first films.
The execution It is a confusing film, but full of nuances that enrich it. It is one of those works that deserves to be seen a second time, to understand what was lost in the first place. It is also the first work of a filmmaker that should be followed very closely, as in addition to directing well, he seems to have no qualms about showing the darker side of Russian society, something that is certainly not common in this cinematography.
To conduct this review, we consulted the following digital interview with the director: «Казнь»: Ладо Кватания — о финале фильма – Афиша Daily (afisha.ru). It is interesting to highlight the fact that the filmmaker would like to make a feature film about the figure of the journalist in the future. Anna Politkvoskayawho was murdered (and suspicions drop that the assassins had links with the FSB, due to the journalist’s critical articles against the Russian political regime).
