Arch enemy it”s the third film written and directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer. After being nominated at the Sitges International Festival for his film Daniel is not real (2019), the filmmaker now tries to distance the superhero genre from the big productions. Debut in Movistar The April 12th 2021.
Max Fist claims to be a hero from another dimension who accidentally fell to Earth, where he cannot use his powers, through a gap in space-time. Only a local teenager who everyone knows by the nickname “Hamster” believes him.

I don”t think there”s practically anyone in the world who doesn”t know the Marvel or DC superheroes. It is the productions par excellence that rule this genre, and that after many years, continue to attract any type of public.
Although we like the formula for this type of production and we already know their worlds, it never hurts to go back a little and start to get a new perspective on the genre. That’s why it’s so brave what Adam Egypt Mortimer does in Arch enemy. One new new and unknown idea that wants to break through a world already conquered, which ends up being a small metaphor for what happens with the protagonist himself.
Inside Arch enemy you see one common denominator with the rest of the Adam Egypt Mortimer films, its plastic and neon aesthetic. It is a smart advantage, as it separates fantasy from reality, through aesthetics and graphics that invade the narrative as if it were a comic book.
This tale of the fantastic world not only features those saturated and fluorescent colors, but they can be seen reflected in mundane life and in the characters themselves. O red and blue as a reflection of the characters” feelings and confrontations, thus creating several narrative and artistic metaphors.
All this added to a gray photograph that shows the city”s decay. It turns out that it is a really smart idea, creating an aesthetic vision that catches the eye of the beholder.
While it is true that Arch enemy it does not want to repeat patterns and, although it strives to create a different story, what most distinguishes it from the others is aesthetics. Even so, a person is rarely seen as the protagonist. defeated hero who mixes with the neighborhoods where he moves. Thus causing the inability to exhibit what most distinguishes it from other humans.
Excessive information is also not a beneficial factor in the first contact. Entering an unreal world can be very complicated because it always takes more minutes, so you have to be careful about what you want to say and what you want to omit.
Arch enemy it does not fail vertiginously in this respect, especially thanks to its intelligent assembly that prevents the story from getting stuck at that point. But it also doesn”t end up being a story that brings emotion or conflict. Factor that happens in many films of the superhero genre and that will be reflected in the climax of this. Somehow, the boys” lives and their many setbacks end up being more important than the deadly threat that keeps the protagonist concerned.
Arch enemy It starts with strength showing that animation super saturated with colors and gradually entering the lives of the characters. After reaching the second act, he loses all that credibility that he has achieved so far, it has a very fast and unbalanced rhythm, in addition to adding the incongruities of some of its characters. But, in the third act he recovers to give it an end according to what he had won in the beginning.
Arch enemy has good intentions and, although it falters in some aspects, in others he approves with a high degree. It has a unique style and above all it has the courage to belong to a genre already very shaped. Despite this, he emerges and struggles to gain a foothold, putting its wonderful aesthetics as its true power.
