Daniel is not real shows Lucas (Miles Robbins) and Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger) in the main roles. Differentiating the duality between good and evil, this excellent duo with unstoppable chemistry leads the film's narrative in all aspects.
At first, Daniel is seen as an aid to Luke after dealing with different family problems. A kind of escape from a reality that is not as good as it should be. However, over time, it ends up transforming itself into a terrifying entity, with a persuasive power over Lucas' character so strong that he seems to be the owner of his destiny.
Two main performances take the viewer on a journey to madness, with an excellent course of action, totally in line with the pace of the film and very similar to what you would expect from two young actors of similar descent: Miles Robbins, son of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins; and Patrick Schwarzenegger, which with that distinguished surname is not difficult to guess Arnold schwarzenegger Like his father.
Following the path of other films from the same producer that Mandy or Color Gradient, Daniel is not real He performs an interesting color palette in which neon lights and unusual tones stand out, which at some point increase the sense of delirium that seems to haunt the main character.
Creating an extravagant and hallucinogenic atmosphere, many of the film's effects refer to a cinema more manual than digital. It is the case of the transformations of the body and this type of monster that appears in the second half of the film. The essence of filmmakers like David Cronenberg and movies like Hellraiser is present. This is appreciated through the creation of these monsters that drink directly from the horror of the body, especially in the moments when Daniel takes more strength.
Although he personally enjoyed a longer start, seeing the beginning of Daniel's existence, the typical role of the traumatic child's imaginary friend unfolds in a relatively atypical way in Daniel is not real.
However, this decaffeinated start seems to agree with the final stretch of the film. While the plot plays out in an excellent way, the final resolution interferes with themes more related to the paranormal. Perhaps it would have been more interesting to continue with the line indicated by the main graph.
Leaving aside the aspects that may cause the viewer to seek more depth than what he is receiving, the use of the disease stands out. Since it is impossible to determine who wins in this battle that Luke and Daniel fight during the film, this is also not important.
Treating a disease as severe as schizophrenia from a pointless point of view and focused on showing the influence of an apparently imaginary being on an adolescent with family problems it's magnificent. As the disease progresses, the comic and charismatic part disappears to make way for an increasingly darker tone.
Although it is not pure perfection, it is a film that does not take long. Its dreamlike aesthetic and the pure charisma of the characters stand out Daniel is not real, giving us a good dose of psychological terror that will make us have fun.
