Synopsis for “Fortunately”
We”ve exclusively released this romantic comedy of delicious cynicism and wild passion that has been defined by critics as a modern update of “The Twilight Zone (The Twilight Zone)” Your main partner is our dear Kerry Bishe from “stop and catch fire” with joel mchale, a seriéphile myth thanks to his role in “Community“
Tom and Janet have been married for years, but their passion is still burning like the first day. An unexpected visit from a mysterious stranger will change that bliss forever and now they must deal with a dead body, many unanswered questions and a trip in pairs with their usual and envious group of friends, who keep their own dead in the closet. (FILMIN)
gladly it essentially starts out as a story of envy, hate and grudges. Specifically for the couple formed by Tom (Joel McHale) Y Janet (Kerry Bishe). The introduction of the aforementioned couple and their unique virtues will help us to know their anger. The fact is that they”ve been married for fourteen years and it seems they”re living on a permanent honeymoon, with an unquenchable desire for them to manifest themselves in public, in private, or wherever they fall. They are such a perfect pair that their friends hate them; they seem like a living act of love and passion. However, all of his acquaintances have had ups and downs in their relationships.
And is that the first idea of the film is that we hate perfection, about when it manifests itself without shame in front of us. Tom and Janet are the classic honey couple, so ideal that they arouse constant envy among friends. One day it”s time to turn the cards over and find out what your friends think of them. Several well-known couples plan a weekend getaway and make it clear to the perfect couple that they”re not invited. Just when this conflict arises, something really unexpected happens. A stranger arrives at Tom and Janet”s house with a folder with a curious content: two injections that will make them a standard couple, with the passion worn out by the years and with its corresponding pettiness.
The point is that when the mysterious visitor starts to be a little threatening and doesn”t seem to leave him the option to inject himself, Janet reacts violently and kills him. It seems that being one looks so cute that it doesn”t vaccinate against other defects. In any case, running away from crime, and Taking advantage of the fact that their friends have finally decided to invite them, they decide to flee the place of death at all costs.
gladly It stands out for its highly accused mixture of cinematic genres, to the point of embracing a certain feeling of inconsistency. The film begins by postulating itself as a somewhat daring romantic comedy, to go to lands close to the thriller or even the fantastic cinema with touches of The twilight zone. There”s also a touch of David Lynch, not a sizable dose of black humor. With these ingredients we have one of the most peculiar romantic comedies of recent times. The genre, which has gone through the indie scrutiny, is becoming more and more common. But rarely like this.
This union, with a hundred sense of suspense and science fiction, relates it to a small hidden gem like The one I love (2014), where most of the action also took place in a house. Without a doubt, the dinners and get-togethers with friends who regularly go out are also another classic feature of which gladly participates. And that takes us from Peter”s Friends (1991), to Coherence (2013) or to Perfect Strangers (2017).
Much of the black humor that shines through gladly it is based on the proliferation of uncomfortable situations among all the couples present at the meeting. On the one hand, the dislike everyone has for Tom and Janet; on the other, the very miseries that everyone carries with them and that begin to show themselves over the weekend. Of course, one of the film”s themes is a cynical view of social relationships, with particular emphasis on love affairs and the hypocrisy they entail. But he does it in an errant, almost abstract way, where there is no common connection, but rather a small collection of diverse scenes.
gladly It has a very elaborate and self-assured staging, despite the fact that it is the debut of BenDavid Grabinski. Photography is sober, stylish, elegant. The camera moves with a rather slow smoothness that brings a mysterious, almost enigmatic feel to the film. This is where perhaps the film pays the greatest tribute to Lynch. The use of music is also quite interesting, successfully mixing songs from PIL, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, or OMD Everything is generally well integrated and consistent with what happens on the screen.
The film”s weight is borne by Kerry Bishé and Joel McHale in their roles as romantic and passionate Janet and Tom. Both act with credibility and empathy; somehow we connect with them. Of the rest of the cast, Natalie Zea would stand out in a somewhat wicked role that adds spice to the film.. One of the disadvantages that can be tackled is that the mix of genres isn”t fully harmonic, some holes in the script are frequent and the film”s thesis seems to be a bit fickle.
There is a considerable amount of mystery that takes time to relate to the thematic perspective of gladly, as if there were several scattered plot lines that develop independently. The conjunction of all these divergent lines is meritorious, albeit somewhat imperfect, but it manages to retain our attention and keep us thinking after the show ends. All this in a simple location, in a spacious and luxurious house, but also full of good ideas.
gladly It is, in the first instance, a sarcastic romantic comedy that, following a series of stylistic twists, visits the eccentric thriller and almost borders on the fantastic. The film”s intention is to offer a vision of human relationships that oscillates between cynicism and idealization.
The resulting combo is absolutely quirky and needs us to keep up at its own pace. However, the audacity of BenDavid Grabinski in her debut she is commendable and hides intelligence in her eyes.
